Summer, etc.
I hope the summer went well for you all. With the fall approaching and a new school year on the horizon, I just wanted to let you know about the tennis workouts we will be hosting in the fall. Starting next Tuesday, September 7, 2010, we will be holding twice a week optional practice sessions for the guys. These will take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45 to around 5:00 at the Cowls Street courts. If it rains there will be no workout. These are optional practices and are a time for the guys to hit a few balls, have fun, and improve their tennis games.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Overall, the kids played very well this weekend against tough opponents, many of whom will most likely qualify for the state tournament in their respective leagues this spring season. Although Jesse and Alex lost both of their matches, they played at a very high level against tough opponents. At No. 3, Micah had a tough draw playing the eventual champion from South Eugene in the 1st round. However, he bounced back winning 8-4 over an opponent from Clackamas, before losing a tough battle in 3 sets to a strong player from Wilson for 5th place in the 3 Singles bracket. Casey was the player of the tournament for us, and received the customary "GAME BALLS" for both days of competition. He played more games than most players did this weekend, and played with a smart gamestyle, mixing slices with hard groundstrokes . . . and his efforts led him to become tournament champion in the No. 4 Singles Bracket! Excellent job Casey!
In doubles, Chris and Myles played the eventual champions from South Eugene in the 1st round, and got off to a great start winning the 1st two games of the match. However, the players from SE started making some incredible volleys and outlasted our Grizzlies in that match. At the No. 2 spot Connor and Russell played a great 1st round match only succumbing 2 games all match! In the semi-finals they played a tough team from Barlow and lost in 2 close sets 4-6, 3-6. In the 3rd place match, they faced the "twin towers" from Lake Oswego. Their opponents both stood around the 6'3 or 6'4 mark and had big serves to go along with their height (one was also an exchange student from Ecuador). The big hitting team went on to win 6-1, 6-0 to claim 3rd place. With the absence of Jake and Kevin (normal No. 3 doubles team), Adam and Nathan slid up one stop in the line-up to the No. 3 doubles spot. They rose to the occasion by playing aggressive yet consistent tennis to win their opening round match over a talented team from Wilson in 3 sets. In the semi-finals they ran into a team from Lake Oswego who liked to "swing for the fences" on every shot. Unfortunately, these 2 were on the money during the match and outlasted Adam and Nathan 6-1, 6-2. In the 3rd place match the next day, Adam and Nathan played a skilled team from Clackamas and got off to a great start, winning the opening set 6-3, before losing 2-6, 1-6 in the final two. Finally, at the No. 4 doubles spot Will Worth and Ben Lewis (who had never played together before in competition) brought a great deal of energy into their matches, and had a great weekend of tennis. They lost their opening match 4-6, 4-6 to a talented team from Barlow, won the 2nd match over a team from Wilson, and lost a close match in 2 close sets in the 5th place match to a team from Lake Oswego 6-7(2), 4-6, despite a back injury from Will that occurred at the beginning of the 2nd set. Later in the match he was able to win a few points off of his "underhand spin serve" which provided entertainment for all who were watching the match!
All in all, the my goals for the weekend were achieved by the guys. They competed hard, were successful in their matches, gained valuable insights about how to play and win at a high level, became accustomed to tournament play (which we will be our format in our District Tournament and at the State Tournament), were exposed to what the level of competition will be like at the State Tournament this May, and most importantly, they had a lot of fun watching and playing tennis, and while bonding as a team. The guys really stepped up their intensity, focus, and level of play this weekend, and I am very pleased with their efforts this weekend. We are at the half-way point in our season and the team has played very well up to this point. From here on out I will challenge the guys to raise their level of intensity, focus, energy, and skills so that we can achieve our overall team goal of winning the Pacific Conference regular-season and district tournament championships. The kids are on the right track to achieving this goal, and will continue to improve and be successful at their current rate of achievement and improvement! Thanks to all who provided snacks and drinks for us this weekend (the Whites, Cases, Johnsons, Kiffs) and to those who traveled up to Portland to watch us play.
Take care.

@ Forest Grove Results
At the No. 1 singles spot Jesse bounced back from a tough loss yesterday to Beaverton's #1 and won efficiently, 6-0, 6-0 over an athletic player. At 2 singles Alex came out firing winning the 1st set 6-1, before struggling a little bit in the second. However, he was able to focus and play smart tennis to pull out the second set 6-4 and subsequently win the match. At 3 singles Micah came out firing again, winning 6-3, 6-0 over a solid player from Forest Grove. Micah has done a great job battling back after missing the 1st three matches of the season due to injury. As of this point in the season he is 4-0, with a 3-0 record in league play. At 4 singles Casey Baker continued to play great tennis, winning 6-0, 6-2. Finally, at No. 5 singles, Aaron Case pulled out a gutsy win while dealing with an injured shoulder for the entire match. He won 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 (shortened match) over a very steady player. Excellent job singles players!
The doubles side of the line-up was equally as impressive today. Chris and Myles got off to a little bit of a slow start, but came roaring back to win 6-2, 6-0. These two are 3-0 in league play at the No. 1 doubles spot. Great work guys. Connor and Russell continue to improve every match, and these two played a very aggressive but smart match today, winning 6-0, 6-2 to also improve to 3-0 in league play. At No. 3 doubles, Kevin and Jake got off to a fast start, winning the 1st set 6-1. Their opponents from Forest Grove came battling back and used a great combination of solid volleys and sneaky lobs to win the 2nd set 7-6, 7-4 in the tiebreaker. This was the first SET Jake and Kevin had lost on the entire season . . . through their 7 matches thus far! With a competitive spirit and lots of aggressive net play, Jake and Kevin were able to settle back into their match, and won the last set 6-3. Great effort guys. Finally, at the No. 4 doubles spot, Adam and Nathan continued their winning ways, posting a great 6-1, 6-1 victory to round out the outstanding overall team effort today.

4. Adam Kiff/Nathan Johnson def. Nathan Dixon/Dominick Barajas 6-1, 6-1
Game Ball: Jesse Stahl - set the tone for the rest of the team by winning 6-0, 6-0
Overall, the guys have played an incredible match. Today, our guys achieved a goal I've set for them during the last few matches. In this case, they started strong, stayed focused throughout their matches, and finished strong as well. As a team, our guys won a total of 6 sets by a score of 6-0. In addition, our guys won 4 sets by a score of 6-1 today. This was an efficient win against a team of solid athletes, and I am proud of the effort, energy, and sportsmanship our players put into this match.
At this point in the season, our overall record is 5-1-1 (2-1-1 non-conference), and our record in the Pacific Conference is 3-0. We are currently in a tie for first place with Tualatin, who we host tomorrow in McMinnville. I hope to see many of you out there tomorrow for our battle for 1st place in the Pacific Conference! I appreciate all of the support we have received so far this season. Keep up the great work.
-Coach Gabrielsen
P.S: A special thanks to Sandi and Mike Colvin for driving up to Forest Grove today and setting up a "bagel, grape, chip, and gatorade shop" for the players, fans, and coaches today. :)

Match @ Westview = Win #1!!!!!!!
Our conditions today were ideal for tennis. Very little to no wind, lots of sunshine, and warm weather. Since we were visiting Westview, we played our match in accordance to their dual match guidelines. As a result, one doubles team was dropped from our lineup, as four singles and four doubles matches would be played to decide who won the dual match. In the event of a 4-4 tie, the number of overall sets won(and then games if a tie still stood) by each team would be used to determine the winner of the match. As a result, our guys realized they needed to win outright in order to solidify a for-sure victory! And they responded well to the task ahead of them . . .
After we went through line-ups our boys hit the courts, eager to take home their first team win of the season. I was very pleased with what happened next . . .
In singles we achieved are rarity in team tennis . . . the ever famous "sweep." That's right, all four of our singles players won their matches today! It's always refreshing to look down at my scorebook and see an "M" for "McMinnville" in the "Winner" column of my scorebook. Let's just say that today I was very refreshed! At number one singles, Jesse started off well, winning the first set 6-2 against a skilled opponent. The Westview player battled back after dropping the first set, taking a 5-1 lead in the 2nd set. However, Jesse clawed his way back into the match and was able to win 6 consecutive games to take the 2nd set 7-5, and the match! At number two singles, Alex played a steady game all match long, running his opponent around the court, playing consistent shots, and being aggressive when he needed to. He won his match 6-4, 6-3. At number three singles, Casey Baker bounced back from a tough, hard-fought loss on Tuesday to win 6-3, 6-4 today. He played solid singles, and was successful by hitting with a nice mix of high topspin balls and his favorite forehand slice shots. Finally, at number four singles, Aaron Case "the human backboard" bounced back after losing the first set 6-4, to win the final two sets 6-1, 6-2. Little did he know (when he came off the court) that his victory today in singles would be the fifth victory of the day for the McMinnville High Grizzlies; therefore, clinching the overall team victory for us today!
In doubles, Myles and Chris started strong, winning the first set 6-4, lost a close 2nd set 5-7 after having two match points, and were ultimately able to redeem themselves as they fought back and won the match by taking the 3rd set 6-4. At number two doubles, Russell and Connor came out swinging and playing hot! They took the first set in decisive fashion 6-3. However, despite their fighting spirit, the doubles tandem from Westview won the next two sets to take the match 6-2, 6-0. At number three doubles, Mike and Will lost a tough battle 7-6(8), 6-4. These two continue to battle every point, during every match, and I am confident that they will get their first victory of the season very shortly! Finally, at number four singles, seniors Jake and Kevin played another exceptional match, hitting great lobs and being aggressive at the net. They won their match in decisive fashion 6-1, 6-2. As a result of our great team effort today, we won the match 6-2 over the Westview Wildcats (scores below):

One thing I like to do at the conclusion of each match is to hand out a game ball to the player who I think best exhibited the characteristics of successful Grizzly Tennis during our match. Today's game ball went to Senior singles machine Aaron Case for closing out an athletic opponent, thereby clinching the team victory for us on the road! Great job Aaron. I don't want to forget to mention the game ball recipient from Tuesday's match against Sunset: Jesse Stahl. Great work closing out a tough opponent both Tuesday and today!
In addition to our varsity matches matches, several varsity reserve players and 7 junior varsity players also made the journey up to Westview and competed well in their exhibition and JV matches. Nathan Johnson, Adam Kiff, Ben Lewis, Marshall Dittel-Payne, David Noble, Wade Brosterhous, Reza Refaei, Cody Thomas, Cody Clark, Jordan Wheeler, and Thomas Carter-Voigt all fought hard and played great matches today.
Overall, I'm very proud of the effort the guys put forth today. Earning our first victory of the year was a great feeling and experience for us all. I appreciate the great effort the kids are putting into their matches and in practice, and I additionally appreciate the sportsmanship that they exhibit on the courts. It pleases me to hear compliments from opposing coaches (like from Westview's coach today and Sunset's on Tuesday) about the effort our players put into their matches. Great work today guys and keep up the classy play!
A special thanks to the Sullivan family for supplying us with great sandwiches and drinks today! We really appreciate your dedication and commitment to our tennis program. And a thanks to all of the parents and Mac High Tennis Alumni who drove up to Beaverton today to cheer for our guys. Thanks again for all of the support and have a wonderful Spring Break.

Match One in the Books!
In regular district play, the format for a team dual match is a total of 9 matches, with 5 singles matches and 4 doubles matches counting for the overall team score. Today, however, we had four singles matches and five doubles matches, and as a result, we had one more player from each team who had the opportunity to play a varsity tennis match!
The kids competed hard today and played well at every position. At number one singles, sophomore Jesse Stahl played patient, steady tennis and outsmarted and outlasted a talented player from Sunset. Jesse played with a good mix aggressive and defensive shots today and pulled out a match filled with great long rallies, 6-4, 6-2. At two singles, junior Alex Worth played his heart out and took part in a great see-saw battle with a talented singles player from Sunset. Alex battled through tough conditions and an injury in the middle of the match to take the match into a heated third set. The player from Sunset eventually won the match 6-4, 6-7 (8), 6-3, but Alex gave all he had to battle throughout the match. At the number three spot in singles, junior Casey Baker had an outstanding see-saw battle with his experienced and skilled opponent, showed off his improved footwork skills and topspin strokes, but eventually lost a well-played match on his part in two close sets 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3). Finally, at the number four singles spot, the "human backboard," senior Aaron Case, battled the Sunset player (who possessed a killer forehand!), hustled for every ball, and lost a close match 7-5, 6-4.
On the doubles side of the line-up, the guys showed tremendous poise and a great deal of sportsmanship in their matches today. At the number one spot, juniors Chris Colvin and Myles Horton had some great rallies and hit some outstanding volleys. Sunset came away with a win at this spot, winning 6-3, 6-3. At number two doubles spot Seniors Russell Jarmer and Connor White showed tremendous patience in their match against a very skilled doubles team from Sunset. Our boys had some great recovery shots during the match and some nice rallies. Sunset prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at this spot in the line-up. At number three doubles, senior Mike Casner and freshman Will Worth showed great effort and got off to a fast start, winning their first set 6-4. They battled through another tough set, eventually losing the second set 7-5. In the third set, the Sunset team got in a groove and prevailed 6-1 in the final set to take the match. In this match, Mike had some great defensive shots and Will hit some powerful smashes! At the number four spot, Seniors Kevin Sullivan and Jaker Baker had an impressive varsity tennis debut and won in convincing fashion 6-3, 6-2 against a skilled Sunset tandem. "Team Lob" played some great tennis and frustrated their opponents on countless occasions by bringing them into the net with a short, drop shot, and immediately lobbing them to win the point. Great effort guys! Finally, at the number five doubles spot, senior Ben Lewis and sophomore Marshall Dittel-Payne played a tough three set match, eventually losing 10-7 in the third set super-tiebreaker.

Overall, I though our guys played with tremendous poise and confidence in their matches, demonstrated great sportsmanship on the court, were great teammates as they cheered each other on from the sidelines, and of course . . . hit some great tennis shots! The effort shown today by our guys shows their determination and desire to achieve one of our team goals this season . . . to win the Pacific Conference Championship. By putting in the work, showing great effort on the court, and representing McMinnville High School well today during our match, our guys will accomplish great things this season! I am privileged to be able to coach a great group of tennis players who are also a great group of human beings. I appreciate all of the support we received from the parents today; thanks for showing up . . . and a special thanks to Doug and Carolyn Johnson for the great snacks today!
Great work Grizzlies!

Mixed Doubles Barbecue
We had a great turnout of parents, family members, and classmates who all enjoyed a barbecue. Like I said before, we had some great tennis as well, as each doubles partnership (consisting of a member of the boys and girls team) was placed into one of 4 groups. Within each group, each team played their group members one time, in the format of a 10-point tiebreaker. In the end, the team who had won the most points in their groups advanced to meet the winners of the other groups in the semi-final round. After 2 great semi-final matches, the final two teams advanced to the championship.
In the finals, the "Nerds" team (Stahl and Selvy) took on the "50s Doo-op/Greaser" team of Bristow and Jarmer. This was a great see-saw battle that took place under the lights and under the viewing pleasure of 40+ McMinnville Tennis Fans, Jesse and Christine (Nerds team) claimed the title in an epic 15-13 match (sorry if the score was one or two points off). All four players played some great tennis, and all 32 players represented the boys and girls programs very well. Coach Macy and I are both excited with our players' performances at this event, and we both anticipate a great tennis season in the upcoming months.
Pictures from the event will be coming soon so check back for those.

Rain, Match-Tiebreakers, and Teams
Wednesday was rainy again, and we had about 35 tennis hopefuls working hard on the track/courts that afternoon. After some fun on the track we took advantage of some dry weather and played some doubles bump. Luckily, today (Thursday, February 25) we were blessed with some excellent (DRY!) weather, and were able to get all 38 kids out there playing match tiebreakers. From 3:45-7:30pm kids played between 2-3 tiebreakers to 10 points and did an excellent job adapting to the windy and chilly conditions. With that being said, the kids showed great promise and poise out on the courts.
