First Match - Glencoe

It finally happened! We got our first match in! The rain left Oregon temporarily and we got our first match in, which happened to be a Conference match today at Glencoe. We were missing a few guys from our line-up but our guys stepped up and played a tough match on the road. Unfortunately we lost all 4 of our singles matches, but fortunately won all 4 doubles matches. If a dual match is tied 4-4 we then use a tiebreaker system to determine who wins the overall match. The first tiebreaker is total sets won and unfortunately Glencoe beat us 9-8 on total sets won. If the set total would have been tied, then we count total games won to determine a winner. Glencoe beat us 75-67 on total games. The JV Squad played a great match and won 6-2. It was a tough match that came right down to the wire. Our guys gave a good effort today and will continue to improve as the season progresses. The guys and I agree that we need to improve our intensity and focus during matches in order to win close matches like today's match, in the future. Overall it was a fine effort, and the guys are ready to play tomorrow at home against Forest Grove. Match starts at 4pm. Here are today's scores: GLENCOE 4, MCMINNVILLE 4 (Glencoe wins 9-8 on sets) Singles

  1. 1. Stuart Tierney def. Jesse Stahl 6-1, 6-2

  2. 2. Kurtis Campbell def. Alex Worth 6-2, 6-3

  3. 3. Tommy Nuthman def. Reza Refaei 6-2, 6-0

  4. 4. Zach Bregthold def. Brendon Walters 6-2, 6-2
Doubles

  1. 1. Chris Colvin/Myles Horton def. Wesley Upton/Mark Reimers 6-3, 7-5

  2. 2. Will Worth/Adam Kiff def. Thomas Reed/T.J. Miller 6-1, 6-2

  3. 3. Cody Thomas/Bradyn Stowe def. Daniel Forbes/Brian Rasmusen 4-6, 6-2, 6-0

  4. 4. Tim Hartsock/Jim Desmond def. Josh Bailey/Zack Furrow 6-4, 6-4
Game Ball - Will Worth/Adam Kiff for a great, efficient doubles victory. Thanks to those who drove up to support the guys today. Also thanks to Kathy Stahl for providing snacks for the guys. See you out on the courts tomorrow!

Rain, Rain, Rain . . .

Well, the tennis season is off to a rainy start. After a solid week of try-outs our first and only week of practice as respective teams before matches begin was very good. It rained on us for the first two days of the week but we were able to get full practices in on Wednesday-Friday of that week. With our first match being on Monday, I was glad we were able to get in three full practices during the week. This gave the guys time to hit some tennis balls, increase their consistancy, and become familiar with their respective doubles partners. I had planned to hold practice Saturday morning of that week, but alas, Oregon weather came out in full force and it rained. Luckily I was able to use my connections as a Linfield Alumni to get us access into the Linfield Rutschman Fieldhouse (Indoor tennis courts) for part of the day on Saturday and Sunday afternoon and night. The guys relished the opportunity to hit more balls and really impressed me with their work ethic, level of focus, and intensity over these two days of practice. Unfortunately. all 3 of our matches scheduled for the week before spring break were cancelled due to poor weather conditions. In addition to those 3 days of cancelled matches, the remaining 2 days of make-up matches were cancelled. I know the guys are itching to get out there and compete, and I am anxious and excited to see them take part in their first match. However, we will just have to wait for the weather to improve before we can get out there and compete! I hope all of you had a wonderful, relaxing spring break. I know the guys are ready to get out there and take on some league opponents this week. Our tentative schedule for the upcoming week (3/28-4/1) looks like this:

  • Monday - Practice 3:45-5:45 @ Patton (slight chance of a make-up match @ home vs. Forest Grove)

  • Tuesday - Match vs. Tualatin @4pm

  • Wednesday - Match vs. Westview @ 4pm

  • Thursday - Match @ Glencoe @ 4pm

  • Friday - Practice 3:45-5:45 @ Patton

  • Saturday - Practice TBA

Let's hope for some great weather this week!

Week 1 Complete!

Week 1 is complete! We were able to get out on the courts for 1 and a half practices this week. Oregon weather was in full force this week and prevented us from having many practices on the Cowls courts. Monday was spent running and conditioning on the Baker Field Track. On Tuesday we were able to use the Red gym and the guys completed fitness circuits, worked on their volleys, and competed in some relay races which tested their speed, endurance, and racket skills. Wednesday we were able to get out on the Cowls Courts. We had 2 try-out sessions and the guys hustled and gave a great effort out there. On Thursday we split the guys into groups of 4 where they played match tiebreakers against each member of their group. As a result of these two days of tennis action, we made our final evaluations and divided the guys up into two teams.
