2 more wins!
As mentioned in my last post, on Thursday we beat Tualatin 5-3 again to sweep them in the season series. This was a great accomplishment for our program, as I believe we are the first team to achieve this feat since the early 2000s. Once again in this match, our doubles depth came through as we were able to sweep the doubles matches and Bradyn was solid again at No. 4 singles for us. Game ball went to Wyatt and Will who each played with an injury, but gave gritty performances to help us clinch the victory.

Yesterday we finished up our last conference road match of the season at Glencoe. A few weeks ago we beat Glencoe 7-1 at home, but they were without 3 varsity starters. I knew this match would be tougher the second time around, especially when Glencoe had a full roster. In addition, they always play really well at home, especially in singles. Despite these factors, our players came out swinging yesterday and were able to clinch the tough 5-3 road victory. Again, doubles came through with some solid play as we again swept the doubles side of the lineup. Bradyn turned in another clutch performance and dominated his singles opponent to extend his season record to an incredible 10-0! Game ball today went to Bradyn and an honorary game ball to our "assistant coach" for the past few weeks Edouard. Most of you have had the chance to meet this positive young man from France who had been staying with the Worths as an exchange student. I know myself and all of the guys on the team have benefited from getting to know him the past few weeks, and we are sad to see him leave. Overall, a great performance by the guys today! At this point we have locked up a 2nd place finish in Pacific Conference play for the 3rd time in four years! A great accomplishment for all of our players, parents, coaches, fans, and our program in general.

Great week of tennis!
Dear Grizzly Faithful,
This has been a great 4 days of tennis for the Grizzlies! On Monday we resumed play against Glencoe, with Reza and Cody both playing one set to finish their respective matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles for us. It is not easy to come back a week and a half to resume a match after it had been rained out, but these tow guys played with fire and energy to win decisively. At No. 2 singles, Reza started his third set strong, using a nice mix of consistent topspin and attacking drives, he beat a very athletic left-handed played 6-1 in the final set to claim a win. Cody, fresh off of a wonderful performance at the Mr. Mac High competition on Saturday night, came out firing as well, winning his resumed second set 6-2 at No. 3 singles. As a result, these two wins gave us a 7-1 win over a very young, tough Glencoe team. Game ball in this match went to Brendon and Nicky who continue to play excellent, fundamental doubles.

On Tuesday we played another match, this time a previously-scheduled match with Hillsboro. Hillsboro is a team that may not have the most talent, but they compete hard and are coached by a very good, positive tennis player. My plan in this match was to mix up our line-up quite a bit - switching usual singles players and playing them in the doubles line-up, and vice-versa. In addition, Will and Wyatt had been sitting due to injuries and sat this match out as well, which gave some of their other teammates an opportunity to play. In addition, I brought up one of our top JV players, Joey Chapman, to play No. 4 doubles with Kj. His varsity debut was impressive as the two meshed well together and played some great doubles. Overall, my hope was that with our line-up changes, the guys would be able to take the lessons they learned from the day and apply them to their normal singles and doubles matches for the rest of the season. As expected, the guys came out firing, earning another decisive 8-0 win over the Spartans. Game ball went to Joey and Kj for their performance at No. 4 doubles.

I believe the last time that was accomplished by a Grizzlies boys tennis team was in 2002. I will post later about that match and our results.

Hit-A-Thon Pictures
Here are some pictures and video clips from our Hit-A-Thon/Davis Cup held last Saturday, April 20th. With all of your support we were able to raise approximately $1,500 for our program!

I apologize for the delay in postings. It's been a very busy 2 weeks of tennis for our program. We've played many close matches, held our annual hit-a-thon fundraiser, and had a fun Davis Cup tournament.
At the moment we currently have a 9-2 record on the season overall. In league play we are 8-2 having dropped another close match 5-3 to Newberg on their home courts. In this match the guys competed hard, got off to a great 2-2 start after the first four matches, but just did not have enough to overcome a deep, athletic Tigers team. I am very proud of the way our players competed and gave their all in every match. At 8-2 we are alone in 2nd place in a very tough Pacific Conference.
In addition to this tough loss to Newberg we have won the four other matches we have played since my last post. We beat Glencoe 5-1 (we still have 2 matches to finish today), Century 7-1 on the road, 8-0 against Forest Grove at home, and finally won last Thursday 7-1 at Tigard against a very deep team - especially on the doubles side of the line-up.
With each and every match our players continue to improve and work harder than ever to earn the win for our program. With 7 matches left in our season it is time for the guys to kick it up a notch and continue to work hard to prepare ourselves for the District tournament. As usual, we have an excellent chance to win the team title and send multiple representatives through to the state tournament - and I myself am extremely excited to see how the guys will perform from here on out!

Great Week for Grizzly Tennis!
Wow! That's all I can really say to start off. What a fantastic week for Grizzly Tennis. Tuesday was a special day for all involved in our program past and present. We trekked up north to Tualatin to take on an always tough, talented, and well-coached Timberwolves team. Our players were extremely focused during the bus ride and during warmups, focusing on their own specific game plans for their individual matches. Once line-ups were read and guys went on court to warm-up with their opponents, they really brought a tremendous amount of focus and energy to the table. A collective effort was made by all of our players and we were able to knock off a talented Tualatin team for the first time in 6 seasons (2007)!
In the past three seasons since I've been coaching, we've always had competitive matches with the Timberwolves but have always come up short. We've dropped some close matches 6-2 or 5-3 losing 2-4 3 set matches each team. This season we have really been focusing on making a collective effort each match to be successful, starting with the warm-up, consistency with shots, focus level, and energy level throughout each match. It takes a collective, sustained effort in all of the aforementioned categories to beat a tough team, especially on the road, and our guys did so in this match. We shuffled our line-up a bit with regular singles stud Bradyn out sick, but guys stepped up in their new roles and played well.
In singles, we were only able to win one of four matches, but all four guys gave it their all. Nathan played a very athletic foe who had handed him his only two regular season losses last year, and again got the best of him. However, I was very pleased as Nathan increased his consistency as the match progressed, and lost over five games at sudden-death deuce points. The beauty of a round robin schedule is he will have another crack at his Tualatin foe in the next match. Reza played at the No. 2 spot for us in the match and played a tough, gritty freshmen. Although he lost in two sets, Reza played a consistent, solid match mentally, while pushing through some arm and leg cramps. Eventually, he dropped the second set in a tiebreaker; the culmination of a two set match that lasted longer than 2 hours. At No. 3 singles, Cody secured our only singles point of the day. Despite giving blood earlier in the day, Cody battled through his match and won in 3 sets against a very talented opponent in a 3-set match that took less time to complete than Reza's 2-set battle. Great job today Cody! Lastly, Bobby stepped into the No. 4 Singles spot for us and battled a tough sophomore opponent, losing in straight sets.
The doubles line-up today showed us what Grizzly tennis is all about! They all came out firing, controlled the net, and played good aggressive tennis - all things we have been practicing over the past few weeks. Will and Adam continued to assert their dominance at the No. 1 singles spot in our league winning decisively in this match. Nicky and Brendon continued to show their cohesiveness and intensity as a hard-crashing doubles team to win against a team that had been playing No. 1 for Tualatin for most of the season. Isaac and Wyatt battled through a rough start to come back with authority and win at No. 3 for us. Lastly, Daniel and Austin took control of the net from the very first game to earn the 5th and clinching victory for us! I want to recognize all of our players, fans, parents, and other supporters who have put in a lot of time over the past few seasons to get us to this point. It has taken the efforts of an entire program and community, but we have finally accomplished that victory over the Timberwolves! Game ball today went to Nicky and Brendon for an outstanding effort from start to finish in their match. This was definitely one of my proudest days as coach of the team over the past four years - right up there with our district championship run in 2010. Go Grizz!

The next day we hosted Tigard. Tigard always gives us a good battle and are well coached. Tigard is much improved and solid especially in doubles. In my opinion they have four doubles teams that could all be very successful playing at the No. 2 spot in most line-ups throughout our league. Despite their improvement, our players came out firing after collecting a big win very Tualatin and carried over their energy and confidence into this match. Even without one of our regular starters in singles, our squad showed its depth once again today as we won 6-2 over a talented Tigers team. Game ball went to Isaac and Wyatt for a hard-earned, three set win at No. 3 Doubles that included some fantastic pure doubles points. This win puts us at 5-1 overall, with a 4-1 record in Pacific Conference play. We currently sit in 2nd place out of 8 teams in our league and look to continue our successes this upcoming week as we travel to Century on Tuesday and host Glencoe on Friday (rescheduled again!)

Isaac and Wyatt battled through a rough start to come back with authority and win at No. 3 for us. Lastly, Daniel and Austin took control of the net from the very first game to earn the 5th and clinching victory for us! I want to recognize all of our players, fans, parents, and other supporters who have put in a lot of time over the past few seasons to get us to this point. It has taken the efforts of an entire program and community, but we have finally accomplished that victory over the Timberwolves! Game ball today went to Nicky and Brendon for an outstanding effort from start to finish in their match. This was definitely one of my proudest days as coach of the team over the past four years - right up there with our district championship run in 2010. Go Grizz!

The next day we hosted Tigard. Tigard always gives us a good battle and are well coached. Tigard is much improved and solid especially in doubles. In my opinion they have four doubles teams that could all be very successful playing at the No. 2 spot in most line-ups throughout our league. Despite their improvement, our players came out firing after collecting a big win very Tualatin and carried over their energy and confidence into this match. Even without one of our regular starters in singles, our squad showed its depth once again today as we won 6-2 over a talented Tigers team. Game ball went to Isaac and Wyatt for a hard-earned, three set win at No. 3 Doubles that included some fantastic pure doubles points. This win puts us at 5-1 overall, with a 4-1 record in Pacific Conference play. We currently sit in 2nd place out of 8 teams in our league and look to continue our successes this upcoming week as we travel to Century on Tuesday and host Glencoe on Friday (rescheduled again!)

News Register Athlete of the Week #2
Congratulations to Wyatt Waterbury this week for being selected as our Boys Tennis News Register Athlete of the Week. Wyatt is off to a great start for the Grizzlies this spring. He's played at three different spots in the line-up for us (No. 4 Singles, and No. 2 and 3 Doubles), and has an undefeated 5-0 record so far this season. He has been fantastic in his approach to matches and has emerged as one of our hardest workers on the team this season. Congratulations Wyatt! (See player profile below):

Yellow Jersey #2
During Yellow Jersey Phase #2 - Reza Refaei was selected by his teammates to don the Jersey! With Nathan out sick for our first three matches, Reza did an exceptional job filling in at the No. 1 Singles spot, going 2-1 against three tough opponents. He did secure a win over Forest Grove (a player who qualified for the state tournament last year), and did so with consistency, a never-say-die attitude, and great grit! Congrats Reza for your exceptional work! Well-deserved (Check out his player profile below as well).

1st News Register Boys Tennis Athlete of the Week
Congratulations to Bradyn Stowe - who was recently selected as our 1st News Register Boys Tennis Athlete of the Week! Bradyn has been excellent so far this season for the Grizzlies and currently has an undefeated 4-0 record for us! He has won all matches in 6-0, 6-0 fashion with the exception of a close, hard-fought 3 set win against Newberg. I am very impressed with not only Bradyn's skills on the court, but also the excellent sportsmanship he plays with. Great work Bradyn!

3 More Matches
Dear Grizzly Faithful,
I apologize for the delay in postings. With the two weeks winding down before spring break, multiple rainouts, picture day, etc. I have been tied up and been unable to post. Building on our great 8-0 win over Dallas, we played three more matches during the stretch of the past two weeks and finished that stretch with a 2-1 record.
The guys played a tough match under the lights against a well-coached Newberg team. We put up a great effort but lost a close 6-2 match under the lights with about 100+ fans watching. The wonderful thing about our season is that we will get another chance to take on the defending Pacific Conference and District Champion Tigers in a few weeks! The guys are fired up and ready to take them on. I am excited to see what the guys will do the next time we take on the Tigers.
Next we took on the Forest Grove Vikings on the road. The guys showed great energy and poise as they bounced back to win 8-0 on the road against a Viking team that came on strong at the end of last season and performed well at the District Tournament. Most of that squad is back, and our 8-0 victory against the Vikings showed the improvements our players have made over the past few months.
Lastly, after two straight days of rainouts, we were able to get in one more match before spring break. This past Thursday we played at Hillsboro and won decisively against the Spartans. This victory was the most decisive win we've had in my four years of coaching here at MHS. The guys were focused throughout, played their own style, dictated play with energy and footwork, and won an excellent match. Our JV squad won decisively as well, sweeping the Spartan team in their matches. Overall, it was a great way to jump into spring break, full of confidence and energy. This win brings our overall record to 3-1, and 2-1 in the Pacific Conference (2nd Place out of 8 teams). When we return from break we play a tough Tualatin squad on the road on Tuesday, followed by Tigard at home on Wednesday. Have a wonderful spring break Grizzlies! Match scores are posted below:

Yellow Jersey #1
A new idea we are implementing at practice this week is the Yellow Jersey. In cycling, the racer that works the hardest and wins each stage of a particular race earns the right to wear a yellow jersey - and they are seen as the leader of the race. We are applying the same concept in our practices each week. At the end of each week, the players will vote for who they think set the tone for the team in terms of work ethic. The player with the most votes will earn the right to wear the yellow jersey each week and be seen as our hardest worker.
This past week, our MHS Grizzlies voted for Bobby Orth as the "yellow jersey" winner. When you see Bobby out at our matches congratulate him for his hard work this past week!

Match One in the Books!
A big congratulations to our Grizzlies for a great opening-day win against a persistent Dallas team. This is the first time in my four years at McMinnville that we've played on the opening Monday of the spring season. The weather held off for us and the guys stepped up big to claim an 8-0 win over Dallas. As a a coach it was fun for me to see our guys play against Dallas - a foe we had seen many times this summer in USTA Junior Team Tennis competition. They are well coached and came out ready to play. In the end, our guys proved to be too much in terms of focus, energy, and skill level and closed out a great 8-0 win. Bradyn and Wyatt set the tone for us at No. 3 and No. 4 Singles and earned game balls for their outstanding 6-0, 6-0 wins.

Week 2
Week 2 is in the books! Guys played great this week and got physically and mentally prepared to due battle with Dallas on Monday. We wrapped up a good week of indoor and outdoor practice with our annual pre-season intrasquad match: Team Red vs. Team Black last night at the Patton Middle School Courts. The guys fought hard and showed that we do have a deep team with much parity this season. Team Black came out on top 3-2 at the end. However, it was great to see the guys cheering for both of our "teams" during the final two matches. They coined the terms "Brad" and "Bread" to represent their affiliation and support with both the Black and Red Teams. Overall, their performance on the court indicated to me that they are ready to jump into match play on Monday.
